Question LAN ip address computer name will not be shown when assigned static ip address

Dear folk



My home network setup is LinkSys router WRT1900ACS with mobiles and desktop computers connected wireless and wired



For my desktop if an ip assigned automatically router shows the desktop’s name as per the snapshot below :

If the static ip address assigned router shows asterisk as per below :

How the name can be shown when static ip assigned ?

This only works if a hostname has been assigned to the device

This name was assigned to my desktop that shows in DHCP ip address not staic ip address

When you said hostname I guess you meant I need to add name to other file right ?

U have 2 options:

1. Don't obsess about it. As long as u can Windows-browse, what's the problem?

2. Assign static via MAC. Tell DHCP for MAC X, assign THIS STATIC, and client configured for dynamic like everybody else.


A third option maybe available if DHCP box also does WINS and you are able to to configure a static WINS entry, this depends if your box let you.
