LAN-to-LAN VPN for a business

VPN question for a student: For a project a classmate and I are doing we have two businesses connected by a LAN-to-LAN VPN. Can the server with the VPN Server software on it be used for other services too, or is it preferable-or necessary-to have a separate server attached to a switch along with the other computers on the LAN in that location. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

It depends on traffic, security measures, server hardware - a lot of variables.
Large companies keep their networking stuff (routers, VPNs) totally separate from their computing stuff (database / file / application servers). Small shops often put all these tasks onto single server.
