Laptop battery not working

Hi
My HP pavilion laptop just doesn't work with the battery. It was fine with the original, but when that died, the two replacements (genuine) that I bought don't power the laptop. I don't think its as simple as not holding a charge. It just won't power up. The only way it works is buy plugging into the mains. It won't even keep working that that in sleep mode, I have to keep freshly plugging it in. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

These are genuine HP batteries? Not copies? If they are genuine HP batteries and won't work that suggests to me there is a problem with the internal power circuitry on the battery side, if correct the only fix is a new motherboard.
