laptop bettery stops charging after a few second !

My laptop is compaq Presario CQ42 . when power cord in , charging start automitacally(LED color is red), but after a few second charging stoped(LED color is white). If I unplug the power cord and then again plug in, it starts charging, and after some seconds it stops charging as usual...What is the solution ?? plese help.

N.B. I have bought the battery only 7 days ago.

My first inclination here is that the battery is dying and in need of replacement
