Following a thunderstorm, I returned to find my laptop off. Before the storm, I had the laptop booted and downloading software updates. Before the storm began, I was able to remote in via TeamViewer.

When I pressed the power button, the system immediately went to BIOS without post message or ASUS start graphics. Normally, the system displays ASUS start, then goes into Win 8. Time settings in BIOS were correct, so I didn't believe it involved the MB battery. I unplugged from wall outlet and booted on laptop battery, but still same result. I also removed laptop battery, reattached, but still same result. I went into Boot Options, but no drives were listed. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Next time connect your computer to a surge protector to prevent damage during thunderstorms.

What may have happened, is that your hard drive got damaged. Not to jump to conclusions but there are a few things you can try.

1.Remove your hard drive and put it back in securely into your PC. Power it on and follow the next step
2.Go into your bios settings, locate the sata options and set the mode from IDE to AHCI.
3.Check if the hard drive shows up in the bios boot priority (not good if it doesn't)
4.Save settings and exit the bios
5.Hopefully it works

Thanks for the reply. The AC adapter was plugged into a 2-port wall socket also being used by a wall-mounted AC unit. The AC unit still functions and socket is appropriate voltage, but an electrical short may have occurred. Proceeded as suggested with HDD removal and reinsertion. System booted immediately to BIOS. In SATA Options, found AHCI already set & HDD and optical listed, but greyed out and unselectable.

I also noticed there were no selectable options for boot priorities or to delete boot options.

If the images don't post, let me know and I will reupload. Laptop does not appear to come with a recovery disk and I am currently out of warranty, so purchasing a new HDD maybe the simple fix. Thoughts?

I see you have fast boot on. Disable fast boot and enable launch csm. Save the settings, reboot and see if the hard drive works now

Press enter on the boot priority options under the "boot" tab and send a screenshot of it if the above step doesn't work

Tried the above, but no successful result. Returned directly to BIOS, but both Enable Fast Start and Enable CSM reverted to disabled status. Boot Priority Options continued to remain unselectable.

Thanks for your help back in June, Reyaz123. Today, I received a Seagate Hybrid Drives ST1000LM014 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 2.5" Laptop SSHD (Bare) to replace my factory drive to try and resolve the issues described. Upon installation and boot, the BIOS recognized the drive, so I thought I would be able to install an OS. Took a Win7 Pro 64-bit/32-bit disk, placed it into the CD/DVD ROM drive, but nothing happened, except I got a dialogue that took me back to the BIOS. I would love to try and salvage this laptop, but scratching my head as to why it's still not working. I have a service ticket in to ASUS Tech Support, which I hope can provide some form of support or recommendations.

Edit 01/20/16: Received the following response from ASUS Tech Support:

For this issue, please first enter BIOS, set the “Launch CSM” option to Enable and the "Fast Boot" option to Disable, then insert the win7 install disk, restart your laptop, press ESC when you see the ASUS logo, and then choose to boot with ODD to install.

I actually had to disable Fast Boot to get to Launch CSM option, then enabled Launch CSM. Placed the Win7 disk into CDROM, then restarted. Upon reboot, I immediately tapped Esc key, then got option to boot from CDROM. However, I got an error related to security settings, so I simply disabled security settings, rebooted and was able to get to Win7 "Starting Windows" splash screen. Currently, that's as far as I can get, after having waited 5+ min. Will also try using Hiren's Boot CD.
