Question Laptop Charger Help

I was working on my laptop one day when I heard a strange sound. It was something akin to a short buzz or static. In my peripheral vision I saw the power block of my laptop's charger suddenly shoot out two eruptions of sparks as wisps of smoke began forming and a small odor could be smelt. Seeing this I quickly disconnected it from the outlet before noticing that my laptop was not charging during the time it was plugged in. I did see a message about needing to replace the battery or something like that, but nothing like this happened before and I needed to get work done for my classes.
As a side note, the laptop I was using was already six to seven years in use.

Can anyone tell me exactly what happened?
If I try plugging the charger back in will the same thing happen?

It could be that the battery shorted (maybe that message had something to do with that)......and the shorted battery caused the charger to smoke.

I don't think that should have happened with a good charger.....but who knows how good that charger was.

Get a good replacement battery and charger from the manufacturer.
