I would like to connect a laptop to another monitor through a USB port if possible so I can just take the laptop often without having to connect the big port each time. The laptop runs on Windows 8. What hardware do I need? An external video card? I have no idea. Thanks for your help everyone.

Not clear why you want this, to avoid having to plug in a cord? You'll have to plug in the cord anyway unless you leave it connected all the time to the monitor, and if you do that, might as well use the video connection you already have. You may not understand exaclty what you want to do or are asking. An external USB card will still have the same video connection at the end of it.

The "boss man" currently has a laptop hooked up to the monitor and when he brings in his laptop he has to connect the usb from the port for internet and also the dvi connector so the laptop and monitor are displaying content. He would like to only have one cord "usb" to plug in when he comes into work.

I don't think you are talking about USB here, unless for some reason you have a USB network card on the laptop which is odd as almost all have a ethernet port built in.

If you want to have one connection, get a docking station for the laptop, then you can leave everything plugged in the dock. I'm thinking there are 3 things go plug in not 2, power, network and video.

If it's a USB dock, and it does not already have a video out, you will just be changing one type of cable for another. Those USB docking sations are made to be generic, in order for them to have video they would need to have video hardware in there. It will be lower quality than the laptop video. I guess you could hang an external USB video card off the docking station USB ports if they provide enough power for it, but he quality and speed of those cards is not good.
