Laptop CPU reaching +90 degrees celcius

While doing stuff except gaming my cpu's temp is around 35-40 but when I start to game its ~ 75 or ~85 depending on the game. I started playing Mass Effect Andromeda recently and I noticed that my CPU temp is constantly 90 or more, somethimes it even hits 96! I do have a cooling pad but I haven't dusted the laptop in months. I've heard that I can undervolt the CPU but I'm not so sure how it works neither do I know if its safe. I got the laptop in august in 2016 and I want it to last at least till 2020, so I really want to keep the CPU at low temps. What should I do to make my CPU last longer? Thanks in advance

Unfortunately this isn't uncommon on my laptops, even with low voltage mobile CPUs. Mobile CPUs can handle higher temps more frequently though.

I know multiple people, including myself, that have removed the bottom of the laptop, got under the heatsink, wiped away the stock thermal garbage most manufacturers used and put a quality 3rd party thermal paste there. I kid you not, on my Lenovo X250 I was getting over 100c regularly and my fan NEVER stopped. I did this and my max temps are now in the low 80s and actually quite rare. Normal working temps are like 25-35c lower now.

Thanks for your answer. I have a question thoe, how regularly should you change the thermal paste? And do you need to change it at all if the stock one isn't garbage?
I was able to fix my temps by the way. I'm not very sure if its because of what I did but I'm saying this because someone with a similar problem might find it useful. I simply set that max CPU usage to 99%. And then I loaded the game and got 75 to 85 temps.

Well, you did it right.I'll suggest that you decide between absolute performance or Laptop's Lifespan

My i3 5010u runs at 2.1GHz, however, I set my max CPU % to around 20% and it now runs at 780Mhz
Now, you must be thinking that the performance must have taken a big hit, but GTA 5 has seen a drop of *only* 15 fps and it now runs at 35-47 FPS which is still ok for me. MAX CPU TEMP=70C
Without the tweaking, it used to get to around 77C

what you have achieved by setting max usage to 99% is that u disabled turbo.
you can undervolt and/or underclock to reduce temps further but that will take away performance from cpu heavy games.
laptops are very prone to heat issues.
make sure your laptop is not flat on the surface use the elevation of your cooler,that elevation alone will bring temps down further 5 degrees
