Hello,
I want to upgrade the CPU on my Acer Aspire 5733 Laptop. Currently it has an i3-380M and I'm looking for an i7.

Without further verbiage, here is the CPUID report. I have removed any arbitrary (per my judgement) data and leaved only the relevant. But If I made any mistake and you want further info, just ask for it.

I want an upgrade to i7-820QM.

Can you see any compatibility issues?

Best Regards

Solution

Intel's Ark page reports the exact same Socket for i3-380M (Laptop's current CPU)

i3-380M:

i7-820QM:

Make a comparison.

I suppose these sockets belong to the same family (otherwise referenced as G1 socket). The socket was the first thing I looked for. But despite this, even if the socket is the same, any other possible incompatibilities ?

Best Regards

true but check your pastebin and it shows your rigs socket as a rPGA989. not 100% but last i checked there are some socket differences between the two (PGA988 and rPGA989) and while some CPU's will work in both some will not. the web is full of forums posts just like yours.

OK. The link from Intel's site you gave, I think it's very helpful. One of the answers there
(https://communities.intel.com/message/212899)
drives the user to this site:
http://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket%20G1%20%28rPGA988A%29.html , that I didn't know its existence.

In this site we can see both CPUs (i3-380M and i7-820QM) listed under the same socket (rPGA988A).

Also we read on "compatible sockets" section
"Socket 989 / rPGA989 (for motherboards supporting first generation of Core microprocessors, as well as mobile Celeron and Pentium CPUs based on Nehalem microarchitecture)."

From Wikipedia we can read:
" Socket G1, also known as rPGA 988A (there are Socket G/rPGA 989 sockets that can take Socket G1/rPGA 988A or Socket G2/rPGA 988B packaged processors)"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_G1

Combining the two references and I assume the socket I have is rPGA989 (as CPUID gave it) that can take Socket rPGA988A, fully compatible.

What a mess!

What would be your decision if you were in my position ?

Best Regards !

if it were me i would only get a rPGA989 CPU. its your best chance at things working right and EVEN then you run the risk of it not working as laptops are notorious for their proprietary motherboards and bios.

Solution

I have updated above answer and added one more reference from the cpu-world site, but I guess it doesn't make much difference, because I know what you mean.

I've made my decision, per your suggestion(s). I won't upgrade.

THANKS for your contribution !

Thanks for the response :)

from what i can gather dual core is as good as it gets for your setup, this seems to be the best CPU i can find that is supposed to be compatible, though i hope i am wrong and someone else can find better info...
Intel Arrandale™ i7–620M Processor (2.66 GHz, 4 MB
total L3 cache, 1066 MHz)—Dual core 35 W

@atomicWAR
leave it.
I've made my decision. This whole situation is a big f.... mess!!!
Thanks again for your contribution and the links mostly,
I will upgrade only if the seller gives me the CPU to test it first. 😛

Best Regards

"Leave it", I meant forget about it. Do not bother your self with this sh..t situation anymore because I've made my decision.

You helped a lot in this decision, and without your help probably I would buy the wrong CPU.
