laptop display not working but external monitor OK

Just yesterday, my laptop monitor just went out. It still shows colors on the screen, but nothing is clearly visible. There are streaks running down the monitor. However, the laptop still works on an external. Anyone know what's going on? I have a dell xps17 laptop. Thanks!

Sounds like either a bad screen or one of the screen interface (can't remember what they are called) boards.

It's been working fine for the last 6 months or so ( since I got it) ... it seemed like it messed up after I unplugged my HDMI cord yesterday ... could that have done something to the screen? Thanks.

Oh, and also at the same time yesterday my computer told me that my hard drive was corrupted. I ended up using the repair program that comes with windows, so my hard drive is OK now.

It is possible that it shorted or something when that happened but I don't think so.
