I have an elitebook 735 g5 with an hdmi and no displayport. It is plugged into a hp ultraslim docking station 2013 which has has 2 displayport and no hdmi. One monitor is old and connects via VGA to docking station. The second has displayport and isn't recognised. Am I right in thinking if the laptop has no displayport then the two displayport ports on docking station won't work? Is there any adapter that might work here ?

It does have displayport. It's the laptop that doesn't have displayport but docking station does. Any way of getting dual screen working with this setup? The second monitor is old and just has vga port which is picked up by the docking station. Do I need some sort of displayport to hdmi connector maybe? Or VGA to HDMI? That could the be plugged into docking station. Want to make sure and buy the right thing.
