Laptop does not recognise external mic

Im trying to use an external mic on my asus k550c laptop. Basically, in control panel, the external microphone is not showing under sound - manage audio devices - recording. It only shows 1 item - the internal mic, even if i tick "show disconnected/disabled devices".

I've updated REALTEK HD audio drivers from ASUS webpage. What is going on?

No it doesn't need any drivers, it's just a simpel desktop mic.
Yes, it does work in other systems.

Have you tried restarting the system? Have you ever used another mic on your laptop i.e. do you know for sure the port on your laptop functions correctly.

Restarting the system doesnt work, and the laptop is brand new so no, i havent tried any other mic. I believe the problem is somehow driver related as there is no external mic device in the control panel, but I may be wrong...

If you plug an external microphone, it will replace the internal microphone, nothing will show up for that microphone. In the "sound - manage audio devices - recording", if you speak in the microphone, did you see the meter at the right reacts to the sound ?

No, it doesnt move at all

So let me see if I have all the facts, if you go to recording without the external microphone, the green bars will go up, but when you plug the external microphone, nothing happens. Do you have a "headphone output/microphone input" combo jack port ? If you have, the plug for the microphone is not compatible with your laptop.

Hope this brings it to the active discussion. I have very similar situation, two laptops running windows 8 Asus AO756-2626 and HP dm4-3099se. Internal mic works on both. I have two computer mics and one professional type that needs an adapter for the jack. When I insert either mics, nothing happens on either laptops. The external mic in the sound settings is greyed out and says currently unavailable.

I have the exact same problem with my ASUS X550C, I have a splitter with 3 plastic splits (TRRS), which works fine on a friends similar notebook with the very same headset, and on my PC it doesn't recognise anything besides what's been there since I first started the PC.

I have already uninstalled and installed the latest version (which apparently was the one I had before, with AudioWizard instead of MaxxAudio (I'm not sure if it actually is called like that, but I do know the name is close) in the speaker tab) of Realtek HD Audio drivers from Realtek's website.
It's really frustrating to not being able to use my external mic, and have the people I speak with listening to every single key I hit when typing.

I've also look over the web, and haven't found any solution, nor cases that wouldn't be solved by purchasing the right splitter, which I bought thinking that it would be the solution, untill I find this topic which also leads to no fix.

Please let me know what can be causing this problem!

P.S.: When I plug the splitter with my headset pluged to it, the headset speakers work, but the mic doesn't. I'm sure it's not neither headset's nor splitter's problem because I tested it on a friends similar laptop, same brand, same look, just not sure of the model..

Thing is, the box that pops asking which device I connected only shows: Speaker, Speakers and
Something about output..

I've already checked device manager, nothing, did more than I thought I could, and so far I guess the only solution may be getting a usb adapter.. Only, of course, if it works..

I've gone through all kinds of irritation and expense over this issue, and maybe I can save you from banging your head against a wall. The combo port will NOT work with an external, standalone mic. You CANNOT fix this with any kind of splitter. You CANNOT fix this by endless fussing with the audio settings, in either Windows or Realtek. Asus and other laptop manufacturers have BROKEN the old mic port, and they did it on purpose because they imagine nobody wants to plug a real mic into a 3.5mm jack. They are wrong of course, but there's no going back. Just don't let them lie to you and waste your time.

What does work? Get a USB mic, a decent one. The Blue "Snowball" is so good I have to turn the gain way down. Or get a full-featured external USB sound-card (not the Turtle Beach Amigo II, which unfortunately does not work for this). I got the Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Surround 5.1, which works with any regular mic I plug into it, with zero noise -- plus it can do line in, RCA plugs out, 5.1 surround and optical digital out.

I hate what Asus (and others) did with the stupid "combo jack" but they'll never admit how horrible it is, so don't make yourself nuts -- bite the bullet and go USB. Or, maybe give up having any "real" mic and try a headset that's made for the ridiculous combo port. Or stoop to using the built-in mic, if your laptop has one -- it might not be as bad as you'd think..

I tend to agree so I did buy Startech's virtual 7.1 external sound card but can't get it to solve my microphone problem. Computer recognizes it but I can't get sound to work. any suggestions?

BUt my microphone came with the headset alltogether, the only thing is that they are separately connected, pink for mic, green for headset, i use a adapter, that you connect both of these cables into the mic/head port, i know it sucks soo much, maybe i just have to buy a usb mic after all

I have an Asus x200ma laptop with audio combo jack. Asus says you need a 4-pole plug but I've tried a headset and another mic (both work on other devices) and the laptop would not recognize them. The ONLY external mic I have been able to get to work used a 3-pole (or stereo type) plug. I'm not sure if it's Asus hardware, 8.1 software, or Realtek software preventing a headset from working.
If you've been unable to get an external mic to work with your laptop, you may want to try a mic that has a stereo-type plug.

outrages but kerumbo is right, you cannot plug in mic and have sound go to your internal speakers of your laptop. Asus knows that very well but they did it on purpose:
1. they spare some physical space
2. they don't want you to buy cheap chinese mic for 1$ and realize that dollar-shop mic works better than their build in mic

Not only ASUS did this, all new laptops are like that. But I am so surprised and disappointed that Asus as the best brand didn't do better.
All world gone crazy about simple-phones-for idiots and so now they will transform our laptops and PCs into same stupid phones ... just a little bigger.
I hoped in vain that at least Asus or somebody will be the good guy.

Here's the thing
I've had my laptop for about 9, 10 months now? Only TODAY did it stop picking up external microphone sounds. I've restarted the mic driver and the Realtek driver, checked for updates, restarted system, even blown into the port to make sure there's no dust or anything stuck in there... Nothing works, but it will still pick up sound from the internal microphone.
I'm testing with two simple headphone/microphone combos, the kind that come with your mobile phone (and both work on my iPad with no problems)
Surely there's got to be some kind of solution if it was working just 17 hours ago?
