Laptop dvd problem

Hello,
My tsst cddvdw ts-l632h has a yellow asterik in a toshiba L305D S5900 laptop after a format of vista (32 bit)

Do you have a set of recovery discs?

Yes, did an uninstall and a restart and tried to update drivers and used add hardware. No go. It has been suggested the drive may be bad. Don't know
how to confirm that.
