So I recently decided to get a new 2024 Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Laptop with a 4070 GPU.

I love everything about this thing, the size/power makes it a great little unit. Now, I already have a
4070 SUPER FE GPU and a Razer Core X eGPU Enclosure that is getting dusty so I figured I may as well use it to have the extra power at home and we all know the difference between a 4070 laptop ( especially the throttled one in the new G series) and the desktop 4070 is huge boostin performance.

Is there any reason that the USB4 40GBPS port would not work with the Razer Core X eGPU Enclosure?
I tried it last week and could not get it to recognize the eGPU. I talked to the online chat at ASUS and they said "That PC isnt compatible with an eGPU", which doesnt make sense to me.

I returned the G14 but I don't want another laptop as it checks all the boxes except ability to use the eGPU.
I have purchased a ROG Zephyrus M16 with a 4090 in the meantime but i just don't like it as much.

For eGPU to work with a laptop, laptop has to have Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port. Or USB type-C that supports eGPUs. Your G14 has neither, hence why eGPU doesn't work and you got such a response from Asus customer rep.
So even with a USB4 to PCIE adaptor like the ADT-UT3G it will not work?

No.

Like i said, USB type-C port has to support eGPUs (or Thunderbolt) for it to work.

Since you already returned the laptop and aren't using it anymore, what else is there to talk about it?
Cause I cant help myself but to love this thing so I bought another. I thought that USB4 has to support Thunderbolt? So even a 40gbps USB4 port can be rigged by the manufacture to not work with en egpu? That is the stupieist thing I ever heard. Bought the HP omen 14 with 4070 but it has issues and is going back. I dont mind it but when Laptop goes to sleep for a few hours it will not wake up no matter what I do. And if i make it so it wont go to sleep after a few hours it freezes and nothing fixes it unless I restart it. But the power light is always lit, even when in sleep mode. Just doesnt respond. I love the G14 4070 except for its one flaw in my opinion

I thought that USB4 has to support Thunderbolt?
It is optional and not mandatory.

Since Thunderbolt was designed as Intel and Apple joint venture, there are royalty issues + certification issues.

No. It's vice-versa. Manufacturer has to include Thunderbolt to the USB4 + send the device to Intel for certification. Else-ways, USB4 works just like USB.

eGPU isn't a disabled feature. It is an optional feature that isn't added.

That you have to take up with HP or whichever store sold it to you. Since they have to provide you customer support.

So I just got a reply from a tech at ASUS who said the following

understand you would like to know if there was anything that could keep the G14 with 4070 from working with a Egpu. Based on your query, the Asus G14 with a 4070 GPU (2024 model) should be compatible with an eGPU using the USB4 protocol, as it features a USB4 40Gbps port. While it does not support Thunderbolt, USB4 is designed to support eGPU setups, provided the eGPU enclosure is compatible with USB4.

So do you think I would have success?

So do you think I would have success?
This topic started by you trying to use eGPU with G14, but without any success.

Then you contacted Asus and 1st rep said that eGPU doesn't work with G14, despite the laptop having USB4.

Afterwards i explained in-depth as of why it is so.

Now, you've contacted Asus again and asked the same thing twice. This time around, 2nd rep said that it "should" work, since laptop has USB4.
"Should work" does not mean "will work".

Unless you are an Ork from Warhammer 40K, where when you believe something is true, then it will actually become so, brought into being in realspace through the power of the Immaterium by your gestalt psychic ability. Otherwise - No.
Willpower alone doesn't make things work like you want them to.

I've already explained things clearly and in-depth but enough is enough and i'll stop here.
If you still insist that it has to work - go ahead and try. If it doesn't, take it up with 2nd Asus rep who said to you that it should work.
