Laptop external monitor problem

Bought a new monitor for my laptop and I am having some trouble. When the monitor is plugged in an I go to te monitors properties only the external shows up not the laptops. When I change the resolution for what is labeled as the external it changes the laptops screen. The monitor goes right to sleep when I plug it in and their is no dual screen option. I updated the drivers anyone have any ideas?

Often laptops have a key combination to toggle between laptop only, external only, and mirrored on both.
