laptop extremely slow, sometimes nonresponsive

I have an HP Pavilion laptop. A few weeks ago it displayed a "press esc to go to startup menu" screen which i fixed, at least temporarily, by turning it off and pressing f10 when i turned it back on to get to a screen where I saved changes. After that the computer worked fine, just a little slower, until a Windows update. After that update the computer worked for maybe 5 minutes top after being turned on and just became nonresponsive, I could move the mouse but it wouldn't click anything. More and more often, it just doesn't respond at all once I get to the desktop. Please help

How old is the laptop? Has it been dropped or hit or damaged in any way?
