Hey!

I'm starting uni soon and I'm looking for a 15' laptop that i'll use for studies, but also for gaming when i am visting my dad.

Currently i've narrowed it down to two, the razer blade 2020 and the mag-15. The reason for these laptops being how discrete/subtle they look and obviously their specs.

I can either get the newest blade with 2060 rtx and the i7-10750h or the mag-15 with 2070maxq and i7-9750h. The "mag-15" also had 1TB ssd rather than the 512gb of the blade, apart from that i believe they are the same.

I am 99% positive the 2nd laptop is the mag-15, but if anyone would correct me if they take a look at the specs i'll be listing under:

  • Dimensions: 356.4mm x 233.6mmx 20.5mm
  • Weight: 1.91Kg
  • Chassis: Magnesium Alloy
  • Screen: Narrow-bezel IPS, 15.6”, 1920x1080, 144Hz, 315 nits.
  • Wifi: Intel® WiFi 6 AX 200, Bluetooth 5.0
  • Chipset: Intel® HM370
  • Audio: Realtek* ALC269M with Intel® HD Audio
  • Keyboard: Silent Mechanical with RGB backlight, 2.0mm travel
  • Touchpad: Glass Click Pad with Microsoft Precision Touchpad Driver Support
  • Battery: 94 Wh, 8200mAh
  • Power Supply: FSP230-AJAN3 (230W)
15,6" 144Hz, GeForce RTX 2070, Core i7-9750H, 16GB, 1TB SSD, Wifi6, Win10Home

I have the option of going with the 2020 blade for 2000€ or the mag-15 for 1750 euros, which one would i be better off with?

Thanks!

If you have to buy one soon, go for the one with the RTX 2070. the 9750H is in no way inferior to the 10750H be it in everyday use or the more performance intensive tasks like gaming /loading multiple CAD objects.

The 10th gen i7 cpu barely edges ahead of the 9th gen i7 so you will be losing negligible cpu performance but getting a decent difference gpu wise with your 2070.

It's not that i have to buy one asap, i start uni late august, however this sale is only running for a week more. Do you reckon I'd be better served waiting for something else and what might that be?

Thanks!

In short: You can't go wrong with the Mag-15

What I wanted to recommend was that you could try and wait for more Ryzen 4th gen laptops to come out, but it'd take longer than August. Currently you have the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 (GA502IV) which ships with a Ryzen 4800HS (much better than Intel offerings) and an RTX 2060 Max-Q (ultrabook variant, designed to run more efficient (80W TDP), but a bit slower than the RTX 2060 Mobile (90W TDP) .

I'm on the lookout for a laptop myself so while doing some digging I found out that the Zephyrus G15 has a cooling issue with blocked off intakes, which reduces it's gaming performance down to the cheaper Asus TUF A15 with a 1660Ti and the same processor (Source). Granted that the intel processor is slower than the Ryzen, its still not slow enough to be a dealbreaker, and the i7-9750H can bring out the best performance out of RTX 2070 as long as it runs cool. This however, is something you don't have to worry about with the mag-15. So I recommend you go for it.
