[SOLVED] Laptop for High School Graduate

Our son is graduating from high school and will be going off to college in the Fall.

We want to get him a laptop (not sure if we should get a Windows or Apple OS type) and I was hoping to get some suggestions for a good solid laptop that he can hopefully have for the coming 4 years and that can survive in his day-to-day life in a backpack and running around. His school offers free software (like office, etc.). Hopefully we can get some discount for a student too.

Deciding between Apple an Windows laptop depends on what school your son is going to. Art majors can live quite well with MacOs, while science / engineering tend more toward Windows. You should check with the school for recommendations.

You absolutely must bring him into the decision.
Even if you've all settled on a platform, Windows or Apple....whatever one YOU want will be the wrong one.

And as much as you, the parent, expect it to be work work work nose to the grindstone....there WILL be games involved.

For my sons first year, the first laptop was an inexpensive 15" Windows thing.
No, not good enough...he changed to a 17".
That did not last long. Too big and bulky to haul around all day.
