Hey everybody,

I'm looking for a decent laptop that will work well with Kali Linux. I know there are some capability issues surrounding some laptops made for windows and Kali Linux so i wanted to make sure I pick up one that will work without too much trouble. I don't plan on dual booting, i plan on doing a fresh install. Looking for something that is preferably an i5 with 8gb of ram. Are the Lenovo ThinkPads still a good option?

Thank you

Hello, why not go to a laptop designed for linux, can be dell that are some based on linux or system76, lenovo thinkpad are good only check the wireless are ok, check the wireless chip and check for compatible with kali, here is where some distro linux have some problem and more with lenovo.

Generally most laptops will work. I've had it running on ASUS, Dell and HP PCs. iX series processors. Mostly 3rd and 4th gen. That being said Kali is pretty insecure to use as a daily OS because you're always running as root. It's also quite different from other distros. If you're just looking to get into Linux Ubuntu/Debian is probably a better call. Or if you just want to learn network security and penetration testing, use either a Kali live usb with persistence or just dual boot with Windows or other distribution. There are a number of tools you can use to repartition without reinstalling everything.

I currently have an internship in the network security field and want to spend some time learning more about it on my own.

Ah then yes boot from a live usb. Or dual boot. Both are easy. The Universal USB Installer can take care of pretty much everything for you. Get an 8 or 16gb (16 is preferable) usb drive and have at it. If you have usb 2 it's going to run slow, but it's workable.

Ask your employers what the best laptop is for your purposes. As they are in the business they should know the answer.
