Laptop GPU freezes when I boost fans

Laptop is MSI GT62VR with an 8gb GTX 1070. This is happening with Batman: Arkham Knight, and Far Cry Primal: on Auto fan speed GPU temp will go up to 90 C, never higher than that. CPU temp will fluctuate from 80 to 85. I can play for hours without any throttling. When I turn on Cooler Boost for maximum fans RPM (4000), the temperature will drop to 80-85, but after playing for 30 minutes the game will freeze, screen will show a random solid color or rectangles, and the laptop will reboot. And if I immediately run the same game with fans at max, the same freeze will happen after just 5 minutes. But if I switch the fans back to Auto speed, the game will never freeze.

My guesses for possible causes are:

1. Fans are causing an electrical problem at max RPM.

2. Even though GPU temp measurement stays under 85 C with max fans, some component of the GPU is going over the limit. Maybe this doesn't happen with auto fan speed because the GPU is throttling at 90, so that other component doesn't go over the limit.

What do you think? How do I fix it?

I will be running some experiments and posting the results.

I think you are on to something with your second guess. Do your cpu temps also stay low with cooler boost enabled? Try downloading hwinfo64 and watching it while you game as it pulls temp info from a lot of different sensors. It'll also show some voltage info.

Yes, CPU stays under 85 C, which is fine on these laptops.
I couldn't get more useful info with that app.
