Hello

I have a laptop with nvidia gtx 1050 and a external monitor 2560x1440 165hz. Currently I get through HDMI 2.0 or lower ( I don't know which version it is) cable 144hz on 2560x1440 external monitor. The question is should I try and buy a HDMI 2.1 cable or the gtx 1050 max refresh rate is 144hz and can't get more Hz

It's not about the cable of GPU capabilities, but instead about the HDMI port your laptop has.

If the HDMI port is 2.0 to 2.0b, than max what that port can do, at 1440p, is 144 Hz. To get higher refresh rate, HDMI port needs to be 2.1.

So, first make sure what version HDMI port your laptop has (laptop specs/manual) and then look if you can go with 2.1 cable.

Btw, with HDMI 2.0 to 2.0b port, you can get up to 240 Hz, if you lower the resolution to 1920x1080.

Thanks for a reply

My laptop has a HDMI 1.4 port. On monitor I tried also lowering the resolution to 1920x1080 and also the max refresh rate is 144hz

My laptop has a HDMI 1.4 port.

HDMI 1.4 port, natively, can do up to 144 Hz @ 1080p and up to 75 Hz @ 1440p.

Now, it is possible to get 144 Hz @ 1440p with HDMI 1.4 port, by using Y′CbCr with 4:2:0 subsampling. However, HDMI 1.4 is incapable of achieving more than 144 Hz @ 1440p due to the limitations of HDMI 1.4. Hence why HDMI 2.0 was made, and now, HDMI 2.1 is latest/fastest.
