laptop hangs when new ram installed

the ram that came with the laptop is a kingston 2gb 1rx8 pc3-12800s ddr3.

the one at i bought today is a pny ddr3 4gb.

when i have both ram installed the old and the new one. the laptop hangs. it dont even post bio.

so i try each stick indivually and it boots up to windows.

why wont laptop boot when both sticks are installed. they both ddr3.?

I had that problem -- turned out the two different brands I was using just didn't like each other -- it happens. So I bought a matched pair and stuffed the two I had in a spares drawer. The matched pair worked fine together.
