i have a laptop hard drive with windows 7 on it but my current computer has windows 8 on its hard drive. could i even plug my laptop hard drive in my desktop and if so what happens when i do since i have two operating systems? would i be able to switch between them or would it just boot either one?

they make 2.5" laptop to 3.5" desktop drive adapters so installing it into the pc wont be an issue.

The pc bios has a boot device selector, you can use that to select which drive is the boot drive. You may have an option to press something like f12 to select the boot drive.

What happens when the win7 drive tries to boot outside of the laptop is anyones guess. Most likely it will crash due to the desktop needing different drivers.

What happens when you reinstall it back into the laptop is a siimular situation.
