My friend's dog is a nutter and when running around, knocked over his coffee onto his laptop, it seems to have shorted out the laptop and i tried fixing it but no joy so far. It was an oldish laptop and he only really worries about recovering the data, so is it possible to connect a laptop hardrive, the laptop is an ASUS SonicMaster, and it is a SATA connection.

In theory it should be fine right? or do i need another device/part to get them to play nice with a desktop PC (SATA ports on MoBo of new PC, mount bracket too)

Should happily plug in and work. You'll need the cables to connect it however. That would be the data cable (which may have come with your motherboard and you have a spare) and a spare SATA power connector. Most people have one free on the PSU.

Since it's not going to be permanent you won't need to mount it. It can rest anywhere it makes sense to, just keep it away from places it could easily fall. If you do, there are inexpensive brackets for doing so.

There's no need to mount a hard drive just to read it.
