I recently dropped my laptop a dell inspiron 1720. The system, vista ultimate , will boot and the screen display still functions but it now says no hard drive present. What other then purchasing a new drive can i try to make the existing one function and or get the data off the broken one?

Well, if it boots, the HD is present, so don't know why error is popping up.

Can you read your files etc ?

Thanks for your answer.Basically what is happening is once the unit has been turned on it starts going through the initial start up procedure and then stops with the error no hard drive found . It is allowing me to enter the boot sequence etc but without finding the drive in either slot primary or secondary.

You might try to do a simple reset, other than that I
Can only suggest you find a reliable hardware guy, seeing as how the unit was dropped, and what may have been dislodged or damaged.
Reset:
*Take out the battery,
*Remove main supply,
*Hold power button down for 30 secs,
*Put only power supply in, do not put battery in
*Turn laptop on, wait for boot to complete
*Put the battery in.

Thanks again for your input.I did asa you said but the system still stops just before its going to boot and tells me no hard drive present and asks me to try again or re-seat the drive etc.I have a new drive coming off e-bay and will try and use it with a new operating system loaded and see if that works.
