I have a laptop HDD that is in RAW state. I put it in my hot swap bay and my computer wouldn't recognize it. After a few tries, I got the tone Windows 10 plays and the drive showed up in My Computer. I don't care about anything on the drive, I just want to be able to use it.

If I double click the drive it will take a while and then a dialog box pops up and reads, "Location is not available. I:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect."

If I right click on the drive and select 'format', it will say it's formatting but then a dialog box pops up that reads, "Windows was unable to complete the format".

I opened up Disk Management and it shows the drive correctly, I: 465.76 GB RAW Healthy (Active Primary Partition). I right click and choose 'format' and it shows it is formatting and after a while a dialog box pops up saying, "The format did not complete successfully".

If I right click while in Disk Management and choose, 'Delete Partition', it will say "The request could not be performed because of an I\O device error".

If I right click and choose 'properties' it shows 0 bytes used, free and capacity. If I choose 'Tools' and then 'Error Checking' a dialog box pops up stating "The disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk".

Windows 10 popped out a message about errors with the disk and ran some sort of repair upon reboot but that didn't fix anything.

I downloaded and ran a program called 'testdisk' and tried everything that offered but it didn't change anything. Whatever I try to do takes a while before I get any pop ups. Which is very unusual with my computer. I use an SSD for my C Drive and I have 32 GB RAM so it's usually very fast.

At this point I'm out of ideas. Like I said, I'm not concerned with anything that may be on the disk. I'd just like to format it and be able to use it again. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It seems like the file system of your laptop's HDD is corrupted, papatuzz! 🙁 Unfortunately, you won't be able to use Windows' Check Disk either because of this RAW HDD format.
You should be able to test the drive using the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic tool, though. You should be able to find it on their official website. If you are unable to find it, you can refer to the some third-party testing tools for help as well. They will help you determine the health and SMART status of the drive.

Give these a try and let me know how it goes!
Good luck!

Is there a way to get it out of RAW State? You know...just put it into NTFS. I tried a third party tool. That was the 'testdisk' program.

Thanks for your fast reply again. I'm going to have to make a little time and go to the manufacturers site as you suggested because I've tried reformatting several times in Disk Management but have had no luck. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
