Hello,

If I am cloning my laptop HDD to a new SSD, will I have to reinstall Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.?

Thanks

I have used easeus to do backup to clone a larger capacity HDD to an SSD (of course the amount of data on the HDD needs to be able to fit on the SSD). You will need a SATA to USB connector to power and transfer data to the SSD while outside of the laptop. After it's all done you just pop it in and your good to go.

Well yeah it's a whole new drive, like getting a new PC, unless you backup your program files on a USB or storage device or put your HDD in an external HDD enclosure, these can be picked up pretty cheap and allows you to use your HDD through USB.

yes... Windows and programs are installed in the HDD, so yes, you would have to install everything into the new SSD. You may want to google if cloning is possible between HDD to SSD... I know it can be done between 2 HDDs... and of course, you would need another PC where to connect both.

You can clone. Check into a program called Backupper.

Their free version can do this. I once cloned a desktop 1TB hard drive onto a 500gb SSD, worked perfect. Install their software, use it to create a bootable cd or usb. Then hook an external hard drive to your system. Boot from your cd/usb, tell it to create an image of your current drive. Shut down when done, pull drive from laptop, install ssd. Reboot from cd/usb, and restore the image to the new drive. If all goes well it should work fine and be a lot quicker. Remember to turn off defragmentation and indexing.

I think the above company may also have a partition resize program if you can't do with normal windows tools.
