My laptop recently died. I need the data on the hard drive and was trying to connect it to my desktop. When the Hdd is connected to the computer it will boot to the lock screen then will hang and finally crash. I have tried to only plug the laptop hard drive and confirmed it is seen by my mother board. I have also tried to plug it in when the computer is on and it is not recognized by the computer. It is a SATA 1 fujitsu hdd.

Solution
Hi there tome_man,

After your system can't boot with the HDD attached internally, your only option is to attach it externally through USB. You will either need an external enclosure or SATA to USB cable as leon2006 already suggested.
After you attach the drive, you need to go to Disk Management and see whether the drive has healthy partitions as well as file system. Depending on that, you can use some kind of partition/data recovery software. If everything seems fine, you can just try to drag and drop the data.
Keep in mind not to overwrite the data in any way.

If you can't access the drive(including software tools), you may need to contact a data recovery company in order to retrieve the data.

Hope this will help,
