Hi, my laptop (HP Elitebook 8540p) is running quite slowly lately. Checked for malware and viruses several times and nothing seems to be found.
I am running Windows 10 on it.
Have 4 GBs ram, Intel Core i5 and it seems a bit off to be running so slow.
I tweaked it a little in registers and services.
Any advice? Or should I reinstall it right away?

Optional: get an ssd to boot windows from and up the ram to 8gb minimum

download latest updated win 10 for free here. make the bootable DVD or bootable USB with their tool

do a clean install of windows 10 (this takes less than 10 minutes usually)

DO NOT tweak anything. Period.

do not install any extra drivers unless absolutely necessary (it should never be needed with windows 10, and it can keep them auto updated)

NEVER use any registry cleaner. EVER under any circumstances. All the do is BREAK windows and cause slowness.
