Laptop kacks when warm

I have a Dell Latitude XPi CD with the following issue: it instantly powers
itself off when it is warm. If I turn it off for 10 minutes or more, it will
turn on, boot up, and run for a few minutes before it instantly shuts off.
Once it is warm, it attempts to start, but usually doesn't even get as far
as the BIOS screen before it kacks.

All power saving has been turned off to simply the debugging of this issue.
I have flashed the BIOS with the latest version. I have tried it with
combinations of battery, adapter, and battery/adapter: in all cases it
behaves the same. I have considered replacing the battery and/or charger,
but have no reason to believe that they are faulty. I have run a Burn In
Test on the machine, but it runs without error. There is a strange whistle
from the unit, but it doesn't sound like a fan or drive, it sounds more like
an old CRT monitor.

Any ideas?

i can not recall if this model even had a fan... but if it does, then
perhaps the fan has died and that the system is shutting down to prevent
overheating. this system has legs on the back that lift the rear of the
system up and to tilt the system towards the user, but the real benifit is
to help keep the system cool. try using them. it would not hurt to try
re-seating the memory and the hard disk. i believe that the processor is
soldered to the system board so there is nothing to do there.
