Question Laptop Keyboard not working/causing power failure when connected

I am trying to salvage a HP Envy M6 laptop I got from a friend. I got it up and running except for the keyboard. When attached to the mother board it prevents the laptop power from working (no light at power plug). But when I unplug it from the motherboard it powers up just fine. Connecting the keyboard after powering on doesnt shut the power off. The keyboard just doesnt work at all. An external keyborad (USB) works fine.
any ideas?

The keyboard is likely defective.
You can buy a replacement for about $30.

I replaced one on a lenovo T30s.
Simplicity itself; particularly if you can find a video
