Help!
Am trying to use my laptop for my control surface commands
but some commands (that I've reassigned) won't work. (My
keyboard shows the numbers across the top.)

In particular, I'm not sure how to use the default
commands, or at least they would appear to use several
keystrokes and be rather clumsy to use. I'd rather not
use an external device (such as another keyboard, numeric
pad, or joystick).

Specifically, anyone know which keys would work best for
the following:
1. pitch up/down
2. elevator trim up/down
3. aileron bank left/right
4. yaw left/right

My arrow keys on the lower right side of my laptop
(up, down, left, right) work fine on one laptop but not on
my new laptop for aileron banking and pitch controls.

Help!

The idea with keyboard controls was to turn the numlock key on a standard
desktop keyboard off. Fight Simulator is really looking for the cursor key
functions. With nimber lock off a desktop keyboard generates cursor "Home"
for 7, cursor to "End" for 1, page up for 9, page down for 3, Insert for 0
and Delete for keypad period. With different notebook models these same keys
MIGHT work even if their araingement isn't as intuitive. Keys like Home,
End, PgUp, PgDn, Ins and Delete can be in different places on different
notebook computer models. You might be able to toggle a keypad lock key to
get some of these functions in an intuitive arangement on a notebook
computer. Early desktops made the number pad do double duty. Their keyboards
lacked the cursor sections that are located betwen the main letter keys and
the number pad on most late model keyboards.

There's a lot of different commands connected with flying and navigationg an
aircraft. A typical desktop keyboard doesn't have many unassigned keys.
Notebook users who choose to run the simulator without a joystick often have
to give up a few other keyboard assignments to fit the essentials on their
smaller keyboards. Maybe you could use you touchpad to click the image of
some less urgent controls on the screen.

Dear Sir,
I am a complete novice in FSim and am lloking for some
general advice.
I have a Sony laptop PCG-FX203K, Windows 2000
Professional, 800 Mh, Intel 82815 graphics (with no 3D
card assumed), 128Mb SDRAM.
I have an old MS FSim v5.1 and would very much like to use
it on my laptop. It does not work at present. An
introductory screen ("MS HOME")comes up but nothing more
happens. Is there any way that I can get this programme to
work on my laptop?
If it is too old for the laptop, then I wikll have to look
at MS FSims 95,98,2000,2002,2004(I have been told this
last will not work on the laptop)
What is the latest version that WILL work on the laptop?
Does not having a 3d graphics card mean that it will work
but some features will be not as good or unavailable.
I do hope you can help as it would help me in getting
started in FSimulation.
Hoping to hear from you.
I presume this email will be replied to direct to

With the Windows versions (95, 98, 2000, 2002 and 2004) It isn't so much
compatability, but getting an acceptable quantity of display updates in a
second. Like many late model destops, notebook / laptop computers have
graphics accelerator chips mounted directly on the motherboard instead of on
a replacable expansion card. It's what accelerator chip you are using and
how much dedicated graphic/video memory that determines how complex the
landscape can be without getting unacceptable frame rates. The more recent
versions of Flight Simulator have progressevely more complex landscapes when
the settings are at the same percentage of maximum and thus lower display
refreshes per second. Concentrate on the Intel 82815 accelerator chip when
trying to research your system's capabilities.

I have seen Flight Simulator 95 in jewel box packageing for under $10 US. I
have also seen card stock packs containing a combination of Flight Simulaor
98 and Combat Flight Simulator for under $20 US. All these in US based chain
stores. Hopefuly those prices will be low enough to experiment. All the
Windows versions have display complexity adjustments that allow higher
refresh rates at the sacrifice of display complexity.

Flight Simulator 5.1 is MS-DOS based and will be looking for expanded memory
support for sound. I suggest you try running the simulation from a shortcut
and attempt to set the shortcut's properties to permit expanded memory
support. Flight Simulator for Windows 95 is essentialy the Windows version
of Flight Simulator 5.1 and presents fewer installantion challenges for
Windows users.
