Laptop left on and now won't load desktop

I unfortunately left my laptop on this afternoon when I put it in my laptop case at school. Then when I got home I tried to turn on my laptop (after it had turned itself of at some point, although not immediately due to power setting changes). Everything was okay until I logged into my account. My screen is black yet I can still see and move the mouse and access the control panel.

I have the HP Pavillion dv6 laptop running windows 7.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

If you press ctrl+(left)shift+Esc you should manage to open the taskmanager, if you manage to open it then open "run new task" and type in "explorer.exe".
