It looks like one of the wires on the cable that connects the laptop screen to the laptop itself have been severed, resulting in a half white half black laptop screen. The HDMI external just says “no input.” I hear the Windows boot up sound, but after 2 minutes the fans get really loud and the whole machine shuts off. Is there anything I can do to restore it, or is it probably toast at this point?

With the fans revving up and then the entire machine shutting down, that makes me think something else is going on in addition to the LCD cable being severed.

Do you know what happened to cause it to become severed? Was the laptop dropped?

Actually the first sign was the screen went nuts and was black and white and cloudy. It was later accidentally dropped and that’s when I opened it up to see the wire problem and then it was only black half and white half, not cloudy. So it seems it had screwed up prior to being dropped, although I am sure dropping it did not help. It’s very hard to diagnose without a screen turning on, but I am hearing the windows logon sound.

I suppose I could open it up and see if I notice anything out of the ordinary, but again if I don’t have a screen it’s going to be hard to tell much.

I figured the fans revving up and it shutting down was due to not having any video and it was shutting itself down assuming that it believed that to be hazardous and it was doing that as a safety precaution. But I don’t know?

If there is enough wire to work with you could repair it. If it's a ribbon cable nope.

You could try on your laptop there should be a FN key over next to you Windows key. Than look on your F Keys up on top of keyboard you should have a symbol of a monitor.

Have your external HDMI/ monitor cable hooked up boot laptop HOLD down the FN KEY and Press the F key with the monitor symbol ------let go wait 5-10 sec if no external picture do it again.

There are three setting that should happen. Monitor on laptop only---Monitor on laptop and external at the same time --- or Monitor on laptop is turned off and only external monitor is active.

True, there could have been an issue with the LCD before the drop and it might have simply been a lose cable or connector to the motherboard. The downside here is that it was dropped not long afterwards. I've learned over the years that drops (no matter how insignificant at the time) can cause lasting effects that aren't always immediately known. This might be one of those cases where it was a small issue that has become aggravated after the drop itself.

If you aren't comfortable with opening it up, don't. Some laptops can be a bear to open and there are TONS of cables and wiring that can get snagged or broken just by pulling too hard.

If you're hearing the Windows sound that tells me it's booting up into Windows. It might likely be BSODing or something which is causing the fan acceleration and then subsequent complete shutdown but even then it usually would either reboot again or stay on the BSOD (which I know you can't see). It could also be overheating and that is resulting in the fans speeding up and then shutting down.

This might sound strange but after it was dropped, if you shake it, do you hear anything lose or rattling inside?
