My original post is here. In short, laptop having black screen crashes. After a lot of diagnosis, I ended up thinking it was the memory stick.

However, I now don't think it was the memory stick. I think it is the motherboard.

I got a new memory stick and plugged it in. After an hour or so, the error returned and crashes resumed. I checked the memory stick in another laptop and now that one isn't working either.

It looks like laptop is frying the memory sticks.

How on earth do I fix that?

If the motherboard is as you say the culprit the only way out of this issue is to RMA the entire laptop. If the laptop is outside of warranty period then replacing the motherboard might help, provided the stick of ram(s) you speak of aren't working on a donor laptop/system that accepts SO-DIMMs.

It could also be that your power adapter might be failing or your power delivery is compromised.

I'm still curious to learn how you "managed" to update the OS to the latest version. I either leave things alone and be patient for the update to come up or figure out that I've spent too much time waiting, backup critical data and then reinstall the OS after fabricating the bootable installer using Windows Media Creation Tools.

I just downloaded the 20H2 installer from the Microsoft website. Worked a charm.

The RMA is an option but I'm sure we're talking a couple of hundred pounds for a new motherboard which isn't ideal.

The thing is, the laptop has 4gb ram built into the board. It's working fine without external ram. If only I could upgrade the built-in ram, I'd be flying.....

I found your post while I was searching for the exact issue on the same laptop model as yours. I also found others who experienced the same problem with Lenovo v330-15ikb laptop:

The frequently of the problem increased after installing CB8GS2400.C8ET (Crucial 8GB RAM), but i don't think the laptop is frying sticks. You've also mentioned that you are using the same RAM size and brand which makes me suspicious of a compatibility issue.
