Laptop - No bootable device

Whenever I turn on my computer, I get the "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key." I have already tried buying and installing a new hard drive to see if it would at least boot up, but the same problem occurred. I tried just doing a system recovery with a disk, so I know the CD drive still works. When doing the complete recovery, I got an error half way through saying there is an I/O error.

I am using a Gateway NC55C. I don't really have anything too important on my hard drive, but I would like to save as much money as possible. Is there anyway to save my laptop, or has the port on the motherboard for the hard drive gone bad?

Solution
It sounds like the last hard drive died (it wouldn't boot and you tried recovery - but got an I/O error). I would replace the hard drive, and boot from the system recovery disk and install Windows. Another options is to create a Windows disk (you need to match it to your license), and reinstall Windows (not sure if the recovery disk has the full copy of Windows on it).
