Laptop not able to detect WiFi

Hey, i have a HP pavilion 15-e016tx
The issue with it is that it cannot detect my WiFi, even though it detects others in the vicinity.
i have tried loads of options too.
the wireless switch is on
ssid is broadcasting - infact if i change the ssid a little bit, even a single character the laptop identifies the network but if i restart the router, back to square one.

Installed the latest ralink driver.
Tried restarting the modem but it just doesn't identify the network .

Please help me out.

If changing the SSID is fixing it then I suggest you change it (add a dash or some obscure character). The issue may be cause by incompatible WiFi standards (nowadays everything is usually backwards compatible) between your router and notebook...

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I added the "_" between 2 characters and now it seems to be working fine.
I did restart the router and went to the farthest corner of the house with respect to the router and it did catch the signal.

I mean how did a ssid change like this rectify the issue?
 

As I said I'm not very informed about WiFi standards and the like, so I can't tell you exactly what happened. For now I'd cough it up to a fussy WiFi card until someone else can give you a more detailed explanation. Glad I could help!

its acting weird once again.
No idea why, SSID name is as changed before,its broadcasting as well.
Wireless switch is on, tried rolling back the driver too, nothing happened.
Went to 192.168.1.1 , - Wireless setting and did nothing but clicked on save.
Connected.
what is happening?!
 

Are you connected? Or are you disconnected? Since you can go to 192.168.1.1, it seems like you are connected.
Honestly, at this point I would call HP support and ask them what's wrong. I'm not an expert on WiFi, but it seems like you might have a bad wifi card/antenna. You could always try opening up your laptop and seeing if an antenna is loose, etc. if you know what you're doing.
 
Yeah, called them a week back. Nothing real , just asking me to do stuff i already did..but it did run again at that point of time, and continued for 2 days , then again started acting weird.
Posted on HP support forum and got a reply which was telling that i had a bad router, but i dont think that is the case as all the laptops can detect my Wifi...as far as adapter goes, i checked it, the wires are fine.
If there was anything wrong with the adapter , no network should have shown up..but the problem is only with the home Wifi.
Do you think that having windows 8 might cause a compatibility issue with the router, because frankly the router is pretty old and the other laptop in my house is also about 2.5 year old ( sony vaio , which has no issue with the wifi)?...
 

I hadn't considered your router as the issue since most WiFi standards are backwards compatible, but since you do have an aging router, it is probably that router's fault. You could always buy a 802.11n or 802.11ac (ac is the newest and fastest standard, fully backwards compatible, newer devices like the HTC One are compatible) router and see if that fixes your issue.
 
 
SOLVED!!!!! Yes ... It's the problem with the channel. I got an MTNL wi-fi connection yesterday and I had been facing the same problem. So I logged into the modem configuration mode and then clicked on the INTERFACE SETUP tab and then on the wireless tab under that. In there I changed the channel from AUTO to 02 from the drop down list and VIOLA IT WORKED!!!! tried switching off the modem and turned it ON again and the computer connected automatically!!!! Guys try THIS.... Who knows it might just work....
....

I m having the same problem my laptop can identify all other wifi networks including the hot spot of my amdroid phone. I hv chnaged ssid name used all sorts of combination but to no gain

Plz help
 


Try restoring wireless adapter ....it will be there in control panel...system...device manager....double click on wireless...click on device....click on roll back.....worked for me like a charm

Omfg! This is insane. How the FCK are people supposed to figure this out? So whenever a channel above 8 was selected it couldn't be found. Now I get it. This shit should be included in the MTNL manual. Will save people countless hours and frustration. Thank you man.
 
Thank you mrabhikr26, your solution worked (change the Port to less than 8 ) I had the same issue with my Windows 8 machine , it was not detecting my home wifi but was able to find all other wifi around me, your solution worked perfect...
 


how do i log into the modem configuration mode? i have no idea about this. can you please explain it in a bit of detail?
 
I faced the same issue, the above solution for fixing the channel to 02 works in the modem configuration.

For the benefit of others, Please follow the steps to resolve the issue.

1) Login to the network(Get connected to the network) using another laptop/ desktop which has windows 7 / linux / OS X
2) Once connected open a browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 and press enter
3) this takes you to the modem / router configuration page asking for a user ID and password
4) Usually or by default the user ID is admin and password is admin / password

Login to the router configuration
1) Click on Interface setup tab / link based on your router
2) Against the Channel setup - choose '02' instead of 'auto' from the dropdown.
3) Save the configuration change.

Now check your wifi - you should be able to see your wifi.
