I have a laptop that I got for free. I was told that it stopped taking a charge. I plugged it in to see if it would turn on the light to see if it had a low battery or something but no light turns on. when you press the power button nothing happens either. I was going to get a new battery but before I go spending money I'd like to know all the possibilities of what could be wrong. I'm more of a desktop guy so laptops are new for me

Solution
Hi

Firstly take the battery out and the power lead, press the power button for at least 30 seconds.
Plug it back in and see if you get any lights.

If you have any interest in electronics or fixing your things i'd suggest getting a multi meter, in your life time you'll find many uses for this and they easily pay for themselves in saved time and money given how cheap they are.

Armed with your multi meter start from the start and test the adapter, there's loads of quick simple tutorials on YouTube for how to use the basic functions on a multi meter.
Sometimes there's a little light on the brick but it's still not giving out the correct voltage, the correct output voltage will be printed on the adapter.
As you have no lights this...

Sometimes there's a little light on the brick but it's still not giving out the correct voltage, the correct output voltage will be printed on the adapter.
As you have no lights this is the most important step.

If your getting the correct voltage from the adapter next up is physically getting your eyes on the charging port itself. This is all inside the laptop and requires opening the device, if this is not possible or your not comfortable with this then it's time to throw in the towel, don't spend money on something like a battery when there's a long list of other things it can be. Perhaps a local shop does no fix no fee.
The port is it a plug in port with it's own connector to the motherboard, does it have it's own little mini board or perhaps it's soldered directly to the motherboard. Regardless your going to want to look and see that the connections are not cracked and no cable has come loose.
This is the cheapest fix and most often the problem as plugged in adapters get stood on and pulled.

After this step and still with no lights and no fan spinning no life what-so ever I suggest taking it to a shop to get it fixed unless your hell bent on fixing it yourself, in which case your going to want to check out how to start testing the board with your multi-meter to see where power is getting to and where it's not.
