Laptop not connecting to tv, using windows 7 via vga

Hello, so i recently had to re-install Windows 7 after having to restore the laptop to Vista. I do remember having the same problem when i first tried to connect my laptop and tv with a vga but i cant remember how i fixed it. It detects another monitor but will only allow me to duplicate the desktops which isnt really what i want. Any help would be appreciated thank you!!
