I have an HP with Windows 7 and vision amd. It's bloody ancient but its all I have and can't afford a new laptop.

The screen died a couple of months ago so I was using an old flatscreen monitor which has been working fine.

Last night I was using the laptop and bumped into it, very lightly, causing it to shut off, which happens fairly frequently because the battery doesn't hold a charge, and the ac plug often easily loses its contact with the laptop, if the laptop is moved even a few millimeters.

So I fiddled with the ac chord and jack til the power light came back on and started the computer back up (as I've done dozens of times before). The difference this time was that though it powered on, nothing came on screen, and the monitor said no signal and then shut off. The caps lock, battery charge, and pcu light (light to the right of the battery light) all flash on and off. The pcu light is much more faint than the others.

I looked through and tried some of the recommendations on this site but to no avail.

I tried taking the battery out and holding the power button for 20 seconds. Tried troubleshooting the ram by taking the two cards out and trying different combinations in the two different slots. Nothing changed. I also tried covering the fans and powering on the laptop to heat up the video card but that didn't work.

Any other suggestions?

Hi,

Here are few troubleshooting steps that I can suggest to you since you've pretty much done most of the possible steps.
- You'll need to open the laptop and disconnect the ribbon cable that connects the display to the motherboard.
- Once done, connect your TV to the laptop again and it wshould detect it as the default display.
- If it still doesn't display anything that means it's time to try another AC adapter that has the same voltage and if it still doesn't work that means it's the motherboard that is faulty already.

Thanks for the suggestions. Before I got your reply I tried disassembling the laptop using this video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YPwfGrLhhV0 in order to try baking the graphics card. I tried this because i read online that if you keep a laptop on an unlevel surface for too long (which I do) it can cause the graphics card to malfunction, due to the soldering coming loose. I keep my laptop on a slanted fan cooling tray thingy so I thought that might be the issue.

Unfortunately at least two things went wrong and the computer won't start at all. The light comes on where the ac plugs in, and when I press the power button that light comes on and the computer goes to start up but powers off a split second later.

One thing I know I messed up was that I couldn't reconnect two wires that connect the monitor to the motherboard. They're the wires shown at 4:30 in the video. I cant stick them where they need to go becaise the way the video shows, you take the wires out without being able to see them, and theeen take the cover off after. So upon reassembly, i cant figure out how to reverse this, as the wires only fit very loosely into their intended place. I'm guessing that has nothing to do with the power problem though. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? Ahhh out of the frying pan and into the fire!
