Laptop CPUs don't just clip in or out in the same way as PCs behave. It's a very delicate and sometimes impossible job and at best, economically unviable for a six year old laptop.

What is the model of the laptop? I just upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1720 from 2008 from a C2D T7500 to a T9500. Cost me, $35 on Ebay. So depending on the model of your laptop, it may be possible.
