Laptop purchase 8th gen

Hi!

Looking to buy a laptop. It has a 7700hq i7 cpu. Is it worth waiting for gen 8s refresh/coffee lake? Any estimated time for the "h/hq" series release?

Hi, if you're looking for a laptop, I would say no. The 8th gen laptop chips are going to be like 7th gen. The main difference is just less power consumption resulting in thinner laptop designs.

I'm terms of power they are almost the same. Only the coffee lake desktop CPUs are being improved with 6 cores. If you want a real change in the laptop cpus then you're going to have to wait till Ice lake which is almost a year away.

No... only the U and the normal desktop ones have dates at specs. Usually H/HQ come a bit later.

Only difference I can tell between that one and others are 4.1 bluetooth instead of 4.2.

Solid specs, looks clean, low weight, good screen-size, good battery

Any other suggestions? Its for school (CAD, matlab, illustrator, photoshop) and some gaming (CSGO, witcher 3, bf1, etc).

Hmm check out the dell xps line. Those are perfect for student who want light weight laptops with good battery and sleek design. They also have pretty good hardware which can run the programs you need as well as light gaming. The touch screen may also help out with photoshop

THAT'S SO NOT TRUE!!!
8th gen mobile cpu's are getting twice as many cores and threads!
All of them have 4 cores (8 threads) just different clock speeds and i7s have more cache

The initial 8th gen CPUs are the Kaby Lake-R (refresh) CPUs ranging between the i5-8250u to the i7-8650u CPUs. There does not seem to be any plans to release 8th gen "HQ" model CPUs with Kaby Lake-R.

Intel actually plans to use the "8th gen" moniker for 3 different CPU architectures. The other two will be Coffee Lake and then later on Cannon Lake... so "8th gen" Intel CPUs will become a bit confusing in the near future. The 9th gen Intel CPUs are known as Ice Lake and they maybe coming out in 2019 depending on how soon Intel can iron out the problems with their 10mm fabrication process.

I am interested in the newer generation of Intel CPUs since I would like to eventually replace my secondary laptop (Dell Latitude 3540 with i5-4200u and Radeon HD 8850m) with something newer. I cannot find any information regarding mobile Coffee Lake CPUs. It would be nice if Coffee Lake introduced 6 core "HQ" moible CPUs, but who knows... maybe Intel will wait for Cannon Lake before introducing 6 core mobile CPUs.

Having said that, Clevo recently announced the P870TM laptop that supports up to the 95w TDP i7-8700k desktop CPU so if designed properly laptops can support 6 core Intel CPUs. Naturally, it would be better for most laptop users if there was a 6 core mobile CPU which would consume less power, produce less heat and provide better battery life compared to a desktop CPU.
