Laptop RAM upgrade

I own a Dell Inspiron 15 3521, and would like to add some ram to it from my brothers dead laptop. There is an open expansion slot, so I'm just wondering if adding this dim will damage my computer.

No, that is what the slot is there for.
Just make certain that the new ram is compatible.
You can check the specs by running cpu-z and looking at the ram specs.
Better yet, go to a ram web site and access their upgrade advisor.
Enter your make /model, and you will get a list of compatible upgrades.
