I have a problem with my laptop, after about 1 minute of not being used the screen goes black then it shuts down. It doesnt just cut out, it performs an actual shutdown. However if I leave the laptop on a video on youtube or just keep using it, then it doesnt shut down.

I have checked the power settings and sleep settings and it is on high performance and this happens on full battery and even when its plugged in to the charger.

Does anyone know why this may be happening?

Another idea that comes to mind IF you have Windows 10; All bugs have not been solved and your issue may be one of them. I have seen and helped here with one that makes the computer go to hibernation and shutdown even if hibernation is disabled, so it would surprise me if your issue is a different one.

So see if you can first create a personalized power plan based on the High Performance plan, and disable everything in it, to to keep the computer running (monitor, HDD, Sleep, Hibrid Sleep, Hibernation disabled on Never) and see if it still shuts down.
This could be due to a cpu heatsink fan problem. The heatsink fan may be failing and the laptop automatically shuts down to prevent the CPU from getting damaged due to heat.

Have you checked the temps when watching a video or something like that?

If you don't know how to open your laptop, please take it to a professional so he can have it properly checked for ya.

Both Windows and the BIOS have power saving options... check the BIOS for enabled power settings. If you have an owner's manual check in it what to look for in the BIOS and if you don't have one, see if the manufacturer has a product page and downloads where you may find a PDF user manual.

If you post the laptop brand, model, submodel etc. we may be able to find the manual and see if it includes BIOS settings you'll need to check.

Go to power settings and change time when your computer goes to sleep(I bet it has been changed not to go to sleep but it shuts down itself instead).

Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings if not there I am sure You will find it.

PEACE

The temps are normal when watching a video, the strange thing is it shuts down when it is left idle. I have watched a full movie without it shutting down but if i leave it for 30 seconds on the desktop without touching it, its shuts down.
