My Laptop ASUS X401A was having some Windows 7 booting problems so i runned ChkDsk and it was fixing bad clusters in several files but then it locked (or at least i think so, it was not reacting for an hour, hour and a half) so i turned it off and started again to re-start the chkdsk, but this time the oS won't boot at all, Windows was gone. Then i realised i will need Hirens Boot to at least take out the data and format the disk. However even Hirens Boot CD (tried both from CD and USB drive) runs extremely slow. Mini Win XP starts after some 20-30m and even then if i click on the drive name nothing happens. Do you have any idea what may be causing this and what can I do to get my files? Thanks!

Update: I managed to enter the Volkov Commander and i didn't find the hard drive there. I guess the drive died?

I was hoping not to do this. :) This laptop has no separate compartments for RAM and HDD which you can access from below. I must disassemble the whole laptop, take out all flat cables, keyboard, motherboard etc... I leave that for last option.

In the meantime, I have started the Mini XP, and TestDisk is running for 2 days now, stopped at some 21% yesterday with some Read errors reported, and is moving very slowly now, still 21% after day and a half but the reporter read errors with LBA numbers are changing slowly it is not stuck. Still hoping it will go though and repair/mark bad sectors so I can use the drive and take out the data.
