Question Laptop too hot while idle

Hi,

I have an Asus K53SC laptop which is 9 years old. Intel i3 2330k processor, Intel HD Graphics 3000 + Nvidia GeForce GT 250MX GPU.

User never put it under heavy load, only used Chrome and playing YouTube videos was the "most" resource-intensive thing.

Maintenance was never done to it and around a month ago it started shutting down while playing a web browser flash game. I thought it might be a temp issue so my advice was to lift the back of the laptop a bit. And for some weeks that worked.

Now it got worse so I formatted it thinking after 9 years, useless software may be using the CPU. I upgraded from W7 to W10 and only installed Chrome.

That didn't make a difference so I applied MX4 thermal paste to CPU and GPU but that didn't work either.

Last time I checked, CPU ran at 85°C while idle, where it's load is @ 25% (Core 1 @ 100% from 'System' and 'System Interrupts'). I can't remember fan speed but it was pretty loud and for sure over 4000 RPM but not at max speed.

What calls my attention is that the GPU, under 0% load since we're talking about idle status, also had a temp of 79-80°...

May the hardware be faulty?

Thanks in advance.

I can't speak to your model of laptop but most I use from that generation have a 2 speed fan. The low speed is always on ... the high speed kicks in at about 80 c and turns off when it brings the temp down to about 60 c. Is your fan kicking in to a higher speed when the cpu idles at 85 c?

In response to your question, no, the fan has more than two speeds.

Turns out Windows Updates were triggering some processes that kept a core at 100% all the time.

Now with that disabled, my CPU is at 2% idle, 58ºC and fan at 4400RPM which seems too much since it's quite silent actually.

Still I think the temp is too high.

When playing 1080p60 video on YouTube, CPU load averages 60% and temp is 80-85ºC with fan speed going up and down 5500-6000RPM. That's not ok, is it?
