Laptop upgrade 500gb to 1tb

Wish to upgrade Dell Inspiron from 500gb to 1tb. Has 32gb SSDD. Have external 3tb USB 3 drive I can send image to.

will the laptop accommodate a 9mm thick drive? Most 1TB drives are 9mm

I think WD's latest Blue drive is 7mm

I just happen to have the WD Blue and the Dell support guy just showed me all I needed to know.

I think I spoke too soon. The Dell guy showed me how to back up everything but partitions, MBR, the hidden partition were not addressed, only the files. I want to make a true clone that I can dump onto an external HDD, put system files onto a bootable thumb drive, replace the HDD with a larger one, then be able to move everything back. Don't know how to accomplish that, don't have much hair, just as soon not pull any more out.
