Laptop 1 - Gateway NV 54
Windows 7
VGA and HDMI connections available
Intel
Laptop 2- eMachines
Windows 10
only VGA connection is available
Monitor - LG W2061TG
I am trying to connect 2 laptops to one monitor.
I've had this monitor connected to these very same laptops before in exactly the same fashion. I had to do a factory restore on the Windows 7 laptop recently, since then I have not been able to get this to work.
NOTHING has changed with the hardware.
The Win 7 laptop has both VGA and HDMI connections. I can get it to work with the VGA connection but not with HDMI
The Win 10 laptop has only a VGA (analog) connection, and it works fine
The monitor has 2 connections, VGA (analog) and DVI (digital). A button (source) on the side of the monitor switches sources. I am using a DVI to HDMI converter
When both computers are connected, the monitor will only operate on analog and will not switch to digital. The Win 10 laptop displays on the analog VGA setting.
When only the HDMI cable is connected to the Win 7 laptop, nothing appears on the monitor and I cannot switch between analog or digital. I do not get a "check signal" message on the monitor. This suggests that the monitor detects a signal via HDMI
Whats really weird is that when both HDMI and VGA are connected to the Win 7 laptop, digital now works but cannot switch to analog. When I disconnect the HDMI cable, the monitor switches to analog automatically. When I disconnect the VGA cable I get nothing but a black screen.
Also, when both connections are connected to one laptop, it shows 3 monitors on my laptop, my laptop screen, the LG monitor (digital) and the LG monitor (analog). The "multiple displays" option will not let me select anything other than "disconnect this display"
I can connect the monitor to a Win 10 desktop PC via HDMI and it works.
I can connect it to a PS3 with HDMI and it works.
I can connect a TV (I've tried multiple tv's) to the Win 7 laptop with no problem. I can also connect the Win 7 laptop (HDMI) and the Win 10 laptop (VGA) to the same TV and all works as it should
What I've done so far:
Checked all settings related to monitor.
Uninstalled/re-installed drivers
Updated drivers
Manually installed the drivers for this monitor that I downloaded from LG support
Reset monitor to factory defaults
....and of course I restarted the computer after each of these steps
The Win 7 laptop STILL does not connect via HDMI to this monitor.
WTF? I do not understand this, it makes no sense. It works in every combination but the one I need. Why will this not work?
****Solved. Seems It was the type of DVI cable I was using. Tried all I had which were DVI-A. Got a DVI-D cable and all works as it should.****
