Here I am again, dear users of Tom's Hardware. Your ignorant Windows newb without a clue of what to do.

I have a Toshiba Laptop which is running Windows 7 Ultimate, language set to English. Now it will not boot W7.

It was working perfectly last night, I did not install anything new or remove anything old. We watched some video on youtube, and when it was finished, my significant other clicked shut down and closed the screen shortly after.

This is where I think something has gone wrong. Did Windows perhaps want to install an update when shutting down, and by closing the screen we interrupted it? It was low on battery, but it did react when I turned it on this morning so it couldn't have emptied completely.

Anyway, this morning I tried to start it. It ran a system scan/check, the kind you can skip by pushing any key. I did not skip it but waited for it to finish. It finished, and then gave me two options:

1) Run startup repair (recommended)

2) Run windows normally

I tried 2) first to see if it would work, it showed the loading bar and a bluescreen for a split second, not long enough for me to read, then it was back to the booting screen for the laptop hardware.

Then I tried 1) which lead me to a black screen for about two minutes, then to the standard blue background with some lines, a dove and a plant that appears behind your user login normally. I can see and move my cursor, but windows startup repair does not show up. I let it be for about 20 minutes, but nothing happened. This I've tried three times now.

You should probably also know that it's not a legitimate copy of Windows. I live in China, so getting a legitimate English language copy is near impossible. I have not been able to locate one despite asking around and searching for it in electronics stores. (Even if they claim it to be legitimate here, it's more likely than not a fake.)
