Laptop with 980m single GPU output via display port to an ASUS VG248QE 144hz monitor

I recently bought a new Alienware 15 with a 980m GPU, i7 4720 CPU and 16GB DDR3. I want to output it to an external monitor and have narrowed my purchase to the ASUS VG248QE which is a 144hz, 1MS 1080p gaming monitor. My question is using display port will I benefit from this higher spec monitor or is there a bottleneck in my system config that will keep me at the 60hz limit? If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I am a noob at this stuff.

Over display port you should be able to push higher than 60hz easily. The only current limitation is that 4k monitors are limited to 60hz on dp due to the amount of data involved. At 1920 x 1080p though your only pushing 1/4 of those pixels so lots of room for higher fps. Also the GTX 980m is based on a (slightly cut down) version of the desktop GTX 970 / 980 cards so it should be able to push high frame rates like that (you may need to turn settings down a bit to get 144 hz of course).

Right click on desktop, click display settings then something along the lines of displayer adapter properties and then a window should open where one of the tabs should have the refresh rate which you can change to 144.
